Hello, I’m here to provide essential art information to kickstart your journey on how to teach children art. This resource is particularly beneficial for educators working with primary and elementary school children. Teaching visual arts to kids can be a rewarding experience with the right knowledge at hand. Art encompasses a wide range of areas including drawing, painting, crafting, sculpting, and even digital multimedia.
If you’re eager to learn how to teach visual arts beyond this blog, consider exploring my books that explore specific art subjects in more detail. Additionally, you can acquire my book “DEFINING VISUAL ARTS,” which outlines art literacy standards. With a background in teaching thousands of children how to paint and draw, I now extend my expertise internationally to train teachers and art teachers to bring literacy into their art classrooms.
Why Visual Art is Important
The first thing you should understand is some important aspects to why children should have art education.
- Humans are the only species on the planet that can create with their hands!
- Making art is another way we can communicate ideas.
- Art making allows children to think creatively, and problem solve.
- Pushing the mind to think outside the box, leads to new ideas, plus innovative thinking.
Teach Different Subjects
Regardless, if you’re a teacher in the classroom or a parent, art lesson topics are all the same. Choosing an area is a personal preference. You might like the idea of teaching children to paint, or you might favor crafts. Generally, the subject area to teach is your choice. But, there are educational art standards guides you can follow for different grades.
Art standards help you understand what to teach. Standards are guides of what children at certain ages should learn. If you would like to understand what art standards are, check out my book “Defining Visual Arts,” or you can look up your state’s or country’s educational department for the standards you need to follow.
Choosing Art Lessons
Begin by selecting the specific subject area you intend to teach, such as painting. First, identify the particular painting technique you aim to emphasize in your lesson, like watercolor painting. watercolor painting serves as a valuable method for mastering the art of painting and can be a great starting point for learners.
Secondly, do some research on art supplies like. Once you have gathered the necessary supplies, I suggest allowing your students time to explore the mediums. Before jumping into formal art lessons. Allow them the opportunity to experiment freely with the chosen medium. Once they have familiarized themselves with the materials, you can decide which techniques you want to learn based on their experimentation and interests.
Just a heads up, there are numerous artist techniques waiting to be explored. If you prefer structured lesson plans, feel free to browse through the art curriculum links provided below. I have years experience knowing which art lessons children should start with first.
Art Standards
If you’re an educator in a school district aiming to align with specific art standards, it’s essential to acquaint yourself with these standards. I’ve crafted various art guides with teaching frameworks to support your instructional journey.
And the third important thing you need to understand is The Elements and Principles of Design. It’s important because the art elements should be included in every art lesson. It’s the artistic language you teach children. Start with introducing simple art elements tailored for these age groups. My guides and curriculum list and explains The Elements and Principles of Design elementary students should first learn. You can access several resources through the links provided, most of which are complimentary.
