7 Tips Painting with Toddler & Preschool
Are you a parent or teacher eager to introduce painting activities to toddlers or preschoolers? I’m excited to share valuable advice gathered from years of hosting art classes. I thoroughly enjoy guiding these young artists through their first creative experiences. Interestingly, young children can grasp painting activities quite readily. Children as young as 15 months delight in painting. At this age, they are more focused on exploring than on creating finished paintings. So lets get started with these 7 Tips Painting with Toddler Preschool Kids.
Use safe paints | 1
Begin by using safe paints specifically designed for young children, ensuring they are rated non-toxic. It’s common for young kids to taste paint out of curiosity, so it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Discover more about selecting non-toxic paints for toddlers and preschoolers.
Painting is Messy | 2
Being ready for messes will help you feel calmer and more inclined to engage in toddler painting activities. Dress appropriately for potential paint spills. Young children may struggle with fine motor skills needed to keep paint in the palettes, so be prepared for occasional spills. It takes time for kids to develop the coordination to avoid frequent spills.
Painting builds fine motor skills | 3
Plan to work on a larger scale until toddlers develop fine motor skills. If you wish to minimize mess, opt for smaller paints and brushes. This is one of the key tips I discuss in my “Kids Painting Book.”
Easy Paint Activities | 4
Avoid teaching complex painting lessons to toddlers; instead, encourage them to explore and uncover the world of paints. Lead by example by dipping a paintbrush into paint or creating basic brushstroke marks. Children enjoy imitating adults and learning through observation and play.
Process-Based Painting | 5
Toddlers and preschool children thrive when they engage in process-based activities. Process-based painting emphasizes the journey rather than the final product. Find out more here.
Paint Play | 6
Think of paint play as a way to explore. Instead of asking young toddlers to make certain pictures, concentrate on the process. When toddlers start painting, they are mainly learning how paint can make different strokes and washes. Keep it easy by letting them freely interact with the paint supplies.
Embarking on these 7 paint tips will enhance the enjoyment for your first-time painter. Embrace the process, have fun, and paint alongside your budding artist. Young children have short attention spans, with beginners often painting for a few minutes to around 20 minutes.
Consistently engage them in painting activities to foster their interest. If you’re eager to expand art education for children, explore my early childhood art guide. For further insights into teaching young children painting, consider delving into my book, “Kids Painting.”
