Mixing Paints into Cool Colors
By Spramani Elaun
The most exciting activities in my art classes is when kids mix colors for the first time.
The look on their faces is magical!
Like their in disbelief when two colors come into contact and change beautifully into a perfect secondary color like green.
My students get lost in mixing strategies with combinations of primaries.
This activity is very simple and you don’t have to be an advance artist to explore color theory with kids, you just need red, yellow and blue paint.
I’m the author of Kids Color Theory, a book created for teachers and parents that would like to teach children beginner color mixing lessons.
Learning to mix cool colors with paint can be learned by kids of all ages.
Kids can learn these simple basics by mixing two to three steps.
Hands on mixing helps kids understand how different cool shades, tints and tones are created.
The changing season can also inspire this learning.
Teaching kids cool color mixing can lay the foundation needed later to paint skillfully.
Learning how to mix paints into cool color moods is interesting and can lead to some linked science learning.
Tip: Show kids examples of cool colors in storybook pictures to fully understand its meaning.

Mixing lessons should be simple two to three-steps
The basic skills I first teach beginning students is to mix green from yellow and blue.
Then I teach kids to make violet mixing red and blue.
I’ve discovered kids can quickly learn this and enjoy the process.
I like to use watercolor and acrylic are the best to use when learning color theory.
I only introduce kids to three primaries red, yellow and blue to achieve cool winter colors in beginning lessons.
If you and your class master this, move to mixing colors by tinting, shading and toning.
Watch this youtube demonstration I created here to better understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wZmhPdDRX4&t=79s
