How-To Choose Art Activities | Children

Types of art activities

Types of Art Activities:

Do you want to learn art with your child? Would you prefer someone else to teach them art? Are you open to doing art activities at home? What’s your budget for classes or art supplies? How often do you want your child to do art? Considering these questions after reading this blog can help you choose the right art activities.

Parents often ask me how to give their kids art experiences on a budget or when they’re new to art. You should also ask yourself if you want to learn art with your child, if you’re open to art at home, and what budget and frequency of art activities work for you. Jotting down these answers is crucial for decision-making.

Let’s talk about popular art activities for homeschooling families. I homeschooled my kids, and they loved these art activities. There are four main ways to involve your child in art: classes, summer art camps, art sessions with other families, or teaching art at home. I’ll explain each option in detail to help you decide what’s best for your child.

Art Classes

Classes focus on teaching specific subjects like drawing, painting, or pottery. Your child begins by learning the basics and then progresses to more advanced projects. The cost of these classes can vary depending on your location, typically ranging from $12 to $24 per class.

Art Camps

Camps are week-long programs where kids explore different art activities each day, keeping them engaged and creative. These camps offer a fun way for your child to enjoy summer with a large group. Depending on your location, art camps can cost between $180 and $360. Consider these tips for choosing summer art activities with your children at home.

Co-op

In art co-op groups, parents with similar interests come together to organize art activities. They take turns planning the topics, gathering materials, and hosting at their home or a chosen spot. Costs are lower as they share expenses on art supplies. Parents rotate teaching duties, covering subjects such as painting. The shared cost for materials typically ranges from $5 to $8 per family.

Art at Home

Exploring art at home is a relaxed and flexible way to learn. You and your child can choose what subjects to learn. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bond while learning together. You can get an art kit or simply gather basic art supplies. Utilize library books for inspiration, like trying out origami. Typically, you’ll create art at your kitchen table or in outdoor spaces at home. The cost for materials for one subject can vary from $25 to $65. The best part is you get to keep all the materials and enjoy multiple projects with what you have.
