Simple Materials
After spending a fun weekend painting with the kids, I wanted to unwind with a hands-on activity that didn’t involve paint. I thought about using simple materials like twigs and string found outdoors to see what we could create. Twigs and string are easy-to-find natural materials that encourage kids to be creative without limits. This craft idea for kids is calming and relaxing, similar to hand knitting.

Gather Sticks & Twigs Outdoors
Moreover, it’s great for fine-motor skill development. During a nature walk, we gathered sticks, twigs of various sizes and collected colorful string and yarn scraps from past craft projects. We also added hemp and natural twine to our supplies.

Join Different Objects With String
We visited a garage sale to find interesting objects like old gears, nails, and hardware to incorporate into our creations. Drawing inspiration from Pinterest, we found ideas to craft with our twigs and strings. My daughter came up ideas. We made Gods eye weave designs from the twigs we found. You can find lots of kid friendly videos on YouTube on how to create Gods eye.

Once we got to the art studio, I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxed and engaged we felt while crafting and playing with twigs and strings.
Materials to Collect:
- Scissors
- String
- Twigs
- Paper rolls
- Hammer
- Screws
- Old gears from broken clocks
- Safe kids acrylic paint
- Wood scraps
- Glue

No Glue Crafts
I found many beautiful string projects online, but most of them required using glue. I wanted to keep away from long drying times or sticky hands in yarn.

Take a few minutes to arrange and size up your sticks. Lay twigs out, then tie each part together with string. Then weave different colors of strings through the twigs in creative ways. We made very interesting art we hung around the house.

Final Craft Tips
This project should produce a relaxing feeling. This project can be inexpensive by collecting materials you already have or up-cycling scraps around your home. Try to avoid difficult instructions. Allow children to have fun and develop their own ideas. Wrap and tie strings to avoid using glue. Of course – I couldn’t resist using paint on my paper roll string art project. Once I got going, creative ideas started popping into my head.
