Ditch Toxic Art Supplies, For Safe Non Toxic

In this blog I want to share why you should ditch toxic art supplies and go for more safer options. My entire business mission began when I started looking for clean, non toxic art supplies for my own children and art students. I have spent many years seeking out the best safe non-toxic art supplies. Looking for typical art materials children use without all the typical toxic ingredients found in most adult-grade art supplies.

From 2004 – 2024, I have taught thousands of students without using toxic art supplies that work great. In fact, I’ve built an entire business around creating safe art mediums for teaching drawing and painting. Non-toxic art supplies work wonderfully and can make nice artworks. You can shop my art supply online store Store.EcoKidsArt.com.

Why You Should Ditch Toxic Materials

Most adult-grade art supplies are tailored for professional artists who require specific project outcomes. Unfortunately, these products often contain hazardous chemicals like solvents, pigments made with cadmium, cobalt, lead, and formaldehyde, which can be toxic. These products come with special handling instructions and can even be carcinogenic.

Such substances should not be in the hands or mouths of young children, who are unaware of the effects or dangers of toxic products. Typically, when you purchase these types of art supplies, there is a caution warning somewhere on the label. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.

Look for Non Toxic Label

In the U.S., we have a safety label, ASTM D4236, which indicates that the product is safe for children to handle and contains no harmful chemicals. If this code is not present on the label, I recommend contacting the company to inquire if the product has been tested, or contains harmful chemicals.

Children’s Types of Art Supplies

There are high-quality non-toxic art supplies that children love using and are pleased with the results. You can find good art products like;

Safe Non Toxic Art Mediums:

  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • Watercolor pencils
  • Markers
  • Watercolor paints
  • Acrylic paints
  • Tempera paints
  • Tempera paint sticks
  • Modeling clays
  • Dyes

All are safe and suitable for kids. When children seek more refined results, they are typically mature enough to read and use products cautiously. Thus, it’s recommended to ditch toxic art supplies when working with children.
