Crayons help you teach better

Hey there! Ever thought about using basic crayons to teach art lessons? Well, after teaching art for over thirty years and thousands of lessons, I’ve got a secret to share with you. Let me tell you how I came back to the good old traditional crayons. It might sound weird, but crayons actually helped me see where I was going wrong in my teaching. Here’s a bit of backstory: When I first started out, my art studio was a total mess. I tried to teach art the way I learned in design college, with paints, canvases, and complex prompts. It took me a while to realize that I was missing out on teaching essential art basics. I finally figured out that my students needed simpler lessons first!

Basic Crayon Packs

I used to think students needed fancy art supplies to be creative. But after years of teaching art, I learned a crucial rule: students need simple basic lessons on art elements step-by-step first!. Now, I realize that these basic crayon art lessons can be taught with any simple art medium like pencils, erasers, sharpeners, or even crayons! Believe it or not, you can teach important skills with a basic $2 pack of crayons… no joke! As my two kids always say, “Facts, mom!”

Teaching Ideas

The important basic lesson all children should learn are the building blocks to learning how to create in 3D. But those lesson need to start out simple. Here are some crayon project ideas I have used year after year to teach my student very important drawing skill sets. I start out with crayons to start teaching these skills. Here listed below are some of the first lesson I teach using crayons.

  • Learning how to draw different lines
  • Learning how to trace
  • How to create textures
  • Color theory like; warm colors, cool colors and complementary colors
  • Geometric shapes
  • How to make a color value scale

If you thought you needed a big budget to start teaching art, think again! While using fancy art supplies can be enjoyable, they’re not essential. Before diving into other drawing materials, I suggest starting with crayons to liven up your lessons. Here’s a tip: kids often underestimate what they can learn with crayons because teachers usually don’t show them the cool techniques like blending, creating textures, or playing with color values. So, trust me, using crayons can definitely help you teach awesome art lessons. So once again…Crayons Can Help You Teach Art Lessons!
