How to Paint Murals, Children, Kids & Families, Classroom

I host collaborative mural painting quite often and I thought I would share my tips here in this blog post.

Painting large does require some set-up and can be a lot of fun.

Mural painting can be done for many type of community causes.

Murals can be done in many sizes.

There is no rules on what size they need to be.

You can use a large framed canvas or canvas on a roll.

Here are the basic supplies you need:

  • A large canvas
  • A  large tarp or drop cloth
  • Different size paint brushes
  • Buckets for water
  • Acrylic paint
  • Napkins or painting rags
  • Smock cover-up

Mural Steps

  1. Brainstorm the idea with your students.
  2. Collect ideas and images that best describes your message as a drawing guide.
  3. Plan and outline your design. If your canvas is large, outline basic sketches with a sharpie marker. It’s Ok if it’s not perfect, its just a guide. You will paint over all the sharpie pen marks.
  4. Decide on the colors, and choose your acrylic paints.
  5. Plan your time for painting and working space.
  6. Be sure you have canvas on a table you can reach from all directions. Place supplies easy for alls students to work around.
  7. Be sure there is clear directions how to clean paintbrushes and work together.
