Painting with kids is something I do on a regular basis.
Painting is fun yet a messy activity that usually gets on clothes.
I meet hundreds of parents and teachers who express they would love for their child or students to paint more, but are usually scared of the paint stains left behind on clothing.
So in this blog I want to share some valuable tips from all my experience painting with well over 200,000 children over the past twenty years in my classes.
You can also learn more in my paperback book Kids Painting, all about setting-up painting for kids.
Planning ahead for these types of messes can provide hours of creative fun, and give you calm peace of mind.
Always have children wear clothing they can get messy.
Similar to playing outside clothes, your students should have art clothes to get messy in while working on art projects.
It’s also a good idea you wear clothes that can get messy too, because you will also get very close to these paints!
Tips 1. Wear art clothes, or a smock that can get stains on them.
Smocks are similar to a cooking apron.
You can also use old shirts to wear while painting.
Tips 2. Teachers can send friendly reminders home to parents, kids can plan to wear the appropriate clothing to school for paint day.
Students who have shown up to my art class with nice clothes found out quickly that paint gets around easy.
Tip 3. The same students that got paint on their nice clothes, decided those stained clothes would be their art clothes!
If you find yourself somewhere and your child has the opportunity to get creative and messy a Quick Tip I use all the time, turning their shirts or blouse inside works like a charm!
Using old adult t-shirts can also work like an artist smock.
You can slip this over a child’s clothes, or cut one side open so they can slip it over their clothes while creating.

[…] We love using acrylic paint! Acrylic is very thick and shiny looking. This paint can be opaque and translucent. Acrylic paint can be thinned down with just water. Best used on paper, wood surfaces, rocks, canvases and most surfaces. Dries very glossy to semi-glossy quickly. Acrylic has the sticking power I need for most surfaces. Acrylic is not easily washable so cover-up with an artist smock! Read my smock tip blog here! […]
